Today I started some more work on Brian's family geneaology and ran across something very intersting. I already knew that Brian's biological Grandmother Patricia Kyle-Irvin was adopted by Bernice Patton-Kyle and Ernest Kyle. Ernest came to Oregon with his family somewhere between 1905 when his youngest brother Victor was born in Oklahoma and 1910 when the US Census was issued again. This census record in 1910 is the one that is of interest because there are two census records for that year for the Kyle family.
The first one is for August's wife Clara and their children Etta, Della, Harry, Ernest, Arloo and Victor. Clara and all six children are listed as living in Ward 7 of Portland Oregon at the time of the 1910 census. Clara is listed as married and the head of household which lead me to beleive that possibly August had died. Then in my searching I found a census record for August Kyle in Ward 6 Salem Oregon. The interesting part is that August is listed as "inmate" where it asks for relation to head of household. He is also listed as married and from Germany so I know he is the right person.
Quite the interesting find I think. I know I had looked at this record before and just figured I would do more research when I had time and today I had some at lunch so I started looking. Not only is the Oregon State Penitentery located in Ward 6 but so is the Oregon State Mental Hospital. And since inmate could really refer to either one that got me searching. Mental Hosptial records as well as prison records are extremely hard to locate and I didn't get them today but plan to keep searching.
One thing in the census record that caught my eye was the name for one of the other men on the page. He was listed as Fred Trott ALIAS J H Trott. That makes me think it was very likely the prison and not the mental hospital unless this was a ward full of men who were being held for criminal offenses but were not mentally able to stand trial.
These weird things are turning out to be just another day in the Russell-Shively
